Labour Party leader Pat Rabbitte has told the Mahon tribunal that development company Monarch Properties supported all political parties through purchase of raffle tickets, sponsorships and race night events.

Giving evidence on Wednesday, Mr Rabbitte said that the Dublin South West constituency party had received a donation of £1,000 from Monarch in 1997.

He said he had had no involvement in the company's proposals for lands at Cherrywood other than casting his vote as a member of Dublin County Council. He said that he had been guided in this by local councillor colleagues.

Mr Rabbitte said that he had received no payments or benefits in relation to Cherrywood.

He objected to the tribunal highlighting in public details of other political donations that fell outside the scope of its current investigation into the Cherrywood lands.

Tribunal chairman Judge Alan Mahon said that it was not the intention that unnecessary information should be made public.

Mr Rabbitte said in relation to Cherrywood there had been "a myriad of motions and tactical motions to bring about a certain result and so on".

"And I think, generally speaking, I seem to have voted for a mix that would seek to protect amenity and cluster the housing," he said.

Former Fine Gael minister Nora Owen said she had received political donations of £500 from Monarch for elections in 1992 and £1,000 in 1997 as well as for a number of golf outings in her constituency in the 1990s. She said political donations did not have any bearing on her role as a councillor.
