Postman stabbed in raid

A search was under way yesterday for two raiders who stabbed a postman and robbed him of €50,000 in Banagher, Co Offaly.

A search was under way yesterday for two raiders who stabbed a postman and robbed him of €50,000 in Banagher, Co Offaly.

The two overpowered the postman as he was making his morning delivery to the local post office shortly before 7.30 a.m.

A scuffle broke out, and he was stabbed once in the stomach.

The raiders, who were in their 20s and dressed in black motorcycle leathers, seized several bags containing parcels and cash and fled on foot.

A getaway vehicle is believed to have been waiting nearby.

The postman sustained superficial injuries and was taken to Tullamore Hospital. His condition was described as not life-threatening. He was later discharged.

Gardaí last night issued a descrition of one of the men, who was said to be 6ft and thought to weigh about 15st.

He was wearing white sports shoes.
