New code of practice for marine craft unveiled

A new safety code for the operation of marine leisure craft has been launched by the Department of Transport.

The code, developed by the Maritime Safety Directorate and Irish Coast Guard, details the rules for operating crafts such as speed boats, jetskis and kayaks.

Its development was in direct response to the rapid rise in recorded accidents involving leisure vessels on coastal and inland waters.

In 1994 there were 189 such incidents, but 10 years later that number had jumped to 478 and rose again to 525 last year.

The Minister of State for Transport Pat the Cope Gallagher attended the launch and said it was the responsibility of the owners and operators of crafts to ensure the vessel is properly maintained.

"I would like to stress the importance of the safe operation of recreational craft and urge everyone to take note of the legislation and recommendations that apply to their particular craft," said Mr Gallagher.
