The new Church of Ireland Archdeacon of Dublin will be Canon David Pierpoint, it was announced yesterday. He will succeed Ven Gordon Linney, who is to retire in the autumn.
Canon Pierpoint is 48 and was ordained in 1986. He began his ministry as an an auxiliary in Ballybrack, Co Dublin, and then in Narraghmore, Co Wicklow, in the Glendalough diocese.
Meanwhile, he continued to work at his job in a bank, as he had done prior to ordination.
In 1992 he became stipendiary curate in the St Patrick's Cathedral Group of Parishes in Dublin city. That followed a period of study at Westcott House, Cambridge in England.
For the past nine years, Canon Pierpoint has been Vicar of the Christ Church Cathedral Group of Parishes in Dublin.
He is married to Denise (née Coates), and they have four daughters, Nicola, Karen, Amanda and Rachel.
In announcing the appointment, the Archbishop of Dublin, Most Rev John Neill, paid tribute to "the unique contribution of Archdeacon Linney and the manner in which as archdeacon he had provided and continues to provide strong support and frequent guidance" to him in the overseeing of the diocese.
