One of the four IRA prisoners jailed in 1999 for the killing of Det Garda Jerry McCabe is to be released from Castlerea Prison in Co Roscommon on May 17th.
Michael O'Neill, from Patrickswell, Co Limerick, will by that date have served eight years of his 11-year sentence and will therefore qualify for release under the rules of remission.
O'Neill was one of four IRA members convicted in February 1999 of the manslaughter of Det Garda McCabe and the wounding of his colleague, Det Garda Ben O'Sullivan, during an attempted robbery at Adare, Co Limerick on June 7th, 1996.
Two of the others received 14-year sentences, while the fourth was jailed for 12 years.
