Luas and car collide near Smithfield

Red line operational after a brief delay

There was a collision between a Luas Red Line tram and a car at around 10am.

The crash took place on Queen Street, close to the Smithfield Luas stop.

Emergency services are at the scene. There are no reports of serious injuries.

The damaged vehicles cleared in less than an hour, but there were traffic delays at the junction of Queen Street and Benburb Street.

Afemale passenger on the tram said the tram had just passed the Smithfield stop when the incident took place.

She said it “felt like [the] tram went over a bump, then came to a slow but sudden halt”.

“About a half a carriage up from where I was sitting, the car ... had driven into the path of the luas.

She said the driver appeared unharmed.
