Kilkee plan to honour Richard Harrisgets the green light

Clare County Council yesterday granted planning permission for plans to celebrate the late Richard Harris in Kilkee

Clare County Council yesterday granted planning permission for plans to celebrate the late Richard Harris in Kilkee. Approval was given despite opposition from residents in the west Clare resort.

Project director Manuel di Lucia said yesterday that one way or another the statue commemorating the late actor would be unveiled on September 30th.

Usually, a ruling by An Bord Pleanála takes four months. "We are absolutely delighted with the decision. Hopefully, they won't appeal, but it is pointless appealing as it is a fait accompli because the board will uphold the council's decision," Mr di Lucia said.

He said invitations for September 30th had already gone to Hollywood stars Russell Crowe, Pierce Brosnan, Brad Pitt, Danny de Vito and Peter O'Toole.

Mr di Lucia said over €30,000 of the €42,000 budget for the project had already been raised with former taoiseach Albert Reynolds contributing €1,000. Mr Harris's sons, who will contribute to the project, will be present for the unveiling.
