DUBLIN BUS has begun an investigation into a fatal collision involving a bus and a cyclist in Dublin’s city centre early yesterday morning.

The incident happened at Fitzwilliam Square East at about 1am. The 67-year-old man was knocked off his bicycle and suffered serious injuries.

He was rushed to St James’s Hospital, where he died a short time later. A postmortem is expected to be carried out today.

The bus driver was also taken to hospital and was treated for shock.

Gardaí at Pearse Street are investigating the crash and have appealed to witnesses to contact them.

A spokeswoman for Dublin Bus has said it will be carrying out an investigation into the exact causes of the collision. “We will also be fully co-operating with the Garda investigation,” she said. “Our thoughts are with the family of the man who died.”

She also said that the driver involved would receive appropriate support from the company.

Meanwhile, gardaí in Co Wexford are investigating a second road death which occurred at the weekend. Adam Fenlon (22), Chambersland, New Ross, Co Wexford, was killed when the car in which he was a passenger collided with another car.

The crash happened at 12.40am on Saturday at Campile Road, New Ross. Mr Fenlon was taken to Waterford Regional Hospital where he was subsequently pronounced dead.

The driver of the car and a second passenger were also taken to hospital.

Their injuries are not believed to be life-threatening.

Gardaí at New Ross have asked for witnesses to the crash to call them on 051-426030.
