The body of Stanley McAuley (41) was discovered off Chamberlain Street, in the east of the city, early yesterday morning.

Believed to be from the area, it is thought he was seriously assaulted before his death.

Both are being questioned on suspicion of murder, police said.

Detectives are trying to establish a motive for the killing but do not believe it was sectarian.

They were alerted to the scene shortly after 1am and the victim was taken by ambulance to the Royal Victoria Hospital.

But he later died from his injuries and his family have been informed.

The PSNI are appealing for anyone who was in the Newtownards Road/Chamberlain Street area between 1am and 1.30am who noticed any suspicious activity to contact them.
