Two men arrested in relation to the murder of a former Garda have been released without charge. The men, both in their 30s, were arrested on Monday in connection with the murder of former detective John Kerins and were held in Carrickmacross Garda station.

Mr Kerins was shot dead last November at his home in Cornaveagh, Co Cavan. Garda are continuing to investigate the incident.

Mr Kerins had been questioned over the disappearance of his neighbour Gerard Daly 18 months earlier. Mr Daly's disappearance became a murder investigation earlier this year.

On Monday, a Garda excavation begun at Mr Kerins’ house, where a large amount of concrete was laid shortly after Mr Daly disappeared. The search finished yesterday afternoon with no body found.
