Fianna Fáil county councillor Mattie McGrath appeared at Clonmel District Court yesterday charged with public order offences.

Cllr McGrath and six others were charged following an incident in Newcastle, near Clonmel, at 12.30am on August 14th last year.

Garda Supt Tom O'Grady told the court that Cllr McGrath had lodged an official complaint about the Garda handling of the case.

He said the investigation would be concluded before the next hearing on May 8th.

Cllr McGrath, Garreneasey, Newcastle, was charged with using or threatening to use unlawful violence and using or engaging in threatening, insulting or abusive behaviour.

Edmund McGrath, Garreneasey; Christopher Cullinan, Liam Lynch Terrace; Jason Aherne, Liam Lynch Terrace; James Lonergan, Liam Lynch Terrace; and Anthony O'Dwyer, Garrincasey (all Newcastle) were all charged with using or threatening to use unlawful violence on two young men.

Stuart Forbes, Liam Lynch Terrace, was charged with using or engaging in threatening, insulting or abusive behaviour.

All the men, except Mr Forbes, were represented by solicitors in court.
