A NEW work by one of Ireland's foremost theologians will "challenge" readers through its strength of argument and passion for truth, delegates at a book launch in Dublin heard last night.

The Breaking of Breadwas written by Cardinal Cahal Daly, who this week celebrates 67 years in the priesthood. The book is intended to be a work for meditation and prayer.

Launching the book, Sr Brenda Dolphin of the Mercy Sisters Leadership Team, said Cardinal Daly (91) had aged like "a fine wine" and that his "undoubted scholarship" was reflected in the text.

"This is not just another book about the Eucharist . . . It has the capacity to help all of us align or realign our lives," she said.

Cardinal Daly said he hoped the book would serve to foster in its readers the "amazement" at the mystery of the Eucharist of which Pope John Paul II spoke. The cardinal added that it was designed as a help towards achieving the aims of the second Vatican Council. "Namely the full, conscious and active participation" of the faithful in the liturgy, which is "their right and their duty by reason of their Baptism".

The Breaking of Breadis published by Veritas and is available in bookshops, priced at €12.95.
