GARDAI are investigating an incident in which the rear window of the President's official car was shattered as Mrs McAleese and her husband, Dr Martin McAleese, left the ceremony.

The couple were in the back of the Mercedes when the incident occurred at 4.20 p.m. They were not injured. Supt John Howard of Tramore said there was no proof that anything had been thrown at the car: "The window was shattered as the President was leaving but we do not know what happened," he said.

A spokeswoman for Mrs McAleese said it could have been caused by a stone thrown up as another car drove over it. No object was found in the car.
