FINE GAEL leader Enda Kenny had a wide-ranging telephone conversation with British prime minister David Cameron last night, The Irish Timeshas learned.
The contact was arranged between Mr Kenny’s office and Downing Street. The conversation took place at about 7.30pm. Topics discussed included Northern Ireland, economic issues and the political situation in the Republic and Britain.
Mr Kenny has taken a proactive interest in Northern Ireland affairs as Opposition leader, making regular visits across the Border.
Addressing the annual conference of the Alliance Party at Dunadry, Co Antrim, last Saturday, the Fine Gael leader said he would do everything within his power to combat the threat of dissident republicans.
Noting that dissident attacks had risen by “70 per cent in the last year”, he said this was “an indication of their determination to undermine the current peace process”.
“The Independent Monitoring Commission has repeatedly stated that these groups are actually recruiting and training young men in particular without any previous terrorist experience and are engaging in serious criminal activity like weapons acquisition,” Mr Kenny said.
