Councillors in Dún Laoghaire/Rathdown last night varied the county's development plan to protect green spaces in housing developments.

Residential developments will no longer be given planning permission on green areas if they were the subject of a deed of dedication to the council or were designated as open spaces on a previous approved planning application.

The move comes after open spaces in Dún Laoghaire, Stillorgan, Dalkey and Foxrock were included in residential planning applications.

Some of the greens had been the subject of deeds of dedication to the council by developers but were not followed through.

Councillors voted unanimously to endorse the variation to the development plan, which was first tabled last December.

The variation states that "residential development will not be permitted on open green spaces which are or have been the subject of a deed of dedication or on areas which are identified as open space as part of a planning permission".

It was put out to public consultation following December's meeting, but received no objections from the public or prescribed bodies.

Meanwhile, councillors have agreed to defer a decision on a local area plan for Kiltiernan.

The plan, which includes a bypass to the east of the Enniskerry Road, a new village centre and a neighbourhood centre, but does not include any sites for schools, had raised concerns among locals and attracted 700 submissions.

Councillors will hold a private meeting with planners on Thursday to address some of the difficulties.
