The Galway For Life group has expressed "sadness" that Connacht-Ulster MEP Ms Dana Rosemary Scallon "has repeatedly failed to represent the views of the vast majority of anti-abortion people who had campaigned and voted for her in the presidential and European elections and were enthusiastically supporting the referendum".
The group dismissed the MEP's concerns in relation to the amendment proposals, which they said "were balanced and compassionate and deserved the overwhelming support of the Irish people".
Ms Éilis Grealy, spokeswoman for the group, said yesterday "these proposals will make abortion illegal but also enshrine in law current Irish ethical medical practice which protects both mother and baby".
Dana has reiterated her determination to vote No and indicated that this is a matter of conscience and integrtity for her.
It is also understood that she has come under considerable pressure in recent weeks from church and anti-abortion sources to change her stance but she has refused to do so.
She has also expressed her dismay at the Rotunda hospital statement on Sunday that it will begin destruction of unused IVF embryos from next year if the referendum is passed.
