Newfound Sounds for June

Aoife Barry's round-up of the best new Irish music

Melted brains, homegrown hip hop, and folk songs feature on Newfound Sounds this month, plus The Ticket's own Lauren Murphy joins the podcast to tell us about the Irish bands we should make sure to catch at this summer's festivals

We kick things off with a track from Dublin's Meltybrains? new EP. To get it, you need to buy one of a limited number of band-designed T-shirts, which come with a download code.

The very first Newfound Sounds featured Donegal's Slow Place Like Home, and this month we have Romola (parts 1 & 2), a taster from his forthcoming release.

Irish MCs are a prolific and a talented bunch, and Dublin's Lethal Dialect is getting ready to release his latest album, 1988. The single, 13 Til Infinity, gives a taster of what to expect, and it already shows how musically he continues to evolve in a very exciting way. He tells us the album is on the way soon.

I'm sad to say that Hello Moon are calling it a day, but they have one last release out this week called An Elephant Pining (as part of a limited edition T-shirt and download package) to bring us one final taste of their Smiths-tinged indie-pop. They play a farewell show upstairs in Anseo, Camden St, Dublin tonight with I Heart the Monster Hero and the Former Soviet Republic.

Limerick's Peter Delaney creates heartfelt, intimate folk that makes you feel glad to be alive, and his second album Witch Bottle is indeed a gentle life-affirming listen. He will launch his album upstairs in Dublin's Whelan's tonight with guests Rory Francis O'Brien and At Last an Atlas.

Galway folk band Juhn Echo might not have an official release yet, but they were kind enough to let us feature a song on this month's podcast. The four-strong group make the most wonderful of sounds with the likes of mandolin, banjo and even concertina.

Belfast's Robyn G Shiels is back with his Underneath the Night of Stars EP, and he's still making heartbreaking music. Produced by Ben McCauley, who has worked with Girls Names, this is another stellar release.

Gorges – Declan Q Kelly, Brigid Power Ryce and David Colohan (Raising Holy Sparks) – will bring you on an underground journey soundtracked by mesmerising noise, and the haunting, shiver-inducing sounds they stoke up show just how talented the folk are out west. The album is due out shortly.
