On Sunday 29th June, as part of the annual Féile an Phráta, the village of Ballydavid, Co Kerry will host the Spud-off Mór, where gardeners throughout the Dingle peninsula compete for the title of champion potato-grower. The prize goes to the person deemed to have grown the Kingdom’s tastiest, best-looking spud. High on the list of previous winners is the floury British Queen, a favourite of Irish gardeners, and a variety that has proven so popular with the judges that the festival’s organisers are considering giving it its own category.
