There's a good yarn behind this Chicago band debut album. On an On were originally called Scattered Trees until two-fifths of the line-up walked, and the remaining trio found themselves with studio time booked and Broken Social Scene producer David Newfeld on hand ready to work. What Nate Eiesland, Alissa Ricci and Ryne Estwing produced with the clock ticking is an album truly firing on all cylinders. Of course it helps that there was already a working relationship in place, but Give In sounds like a mighty leap forward. Chockablock with giddy, bubbling indie-pop and electronic grooves, the album is a call to succumb to the moment, and songs Ghosts and The Hunter are positive messages in that regard. What's impressive throughout is the trio's skill at creating detailed mosaics of sound with shimmering synths, grandstanding guitars and ethereal textures. itsonanon.com
