Finish trio Mopo would rather make their audience smile than frown, and their grungey, lo-fi sound, with flavours of punk and ska, wouldn't be out of place in a circus tent. Not that saxophonist Linda Fredriksson, bassist Eero Tikkanen and drummer Eeti Nieminen can't play – they certainly can, and there are discernible echoes of Dave Holland's supple use of rhythm. But Mopo are part of a new European generation who are bypassing technical one-upmanship (the sort that impresses other musicians but leaves the auditorium empty) in favour of a more inclusive approach. It's all charmingly chunky, like a sweater knit by a friend: you don't wear it because it's finely knit and will impress other people; you wear it because it keeps you warm and makes you smile.
