Aside from an impressive pop pedigree (a Sex Pistol for a father, a Culture Clubber for a mother), Hollie Cook comes to the table armed with a fine voice, smashing songs and a good sense of what it takes to produce hazy, sandy, sunny pop. Her second album is a leap and jump from where her debut left off, Cook underlining and highlighting a rub of songs full of tropical spirit and Caribbean groove. Cook and her producer, Prince Fatty, twist and turn these songs into off-kilter gems by adding kooky melodies (Desdemona), thumping strings (Twice) or dubby atmospherics (Looking for Real Love). There's also a nod to her musical heritage in the shape of Ari Up, a fine tribute to the Slits' frontwoman and Cook's former bandmate. An album of heart and bounce. holliecook.com
