When Steven Ellison initially went to work on the fifth Flying Lotus album, the plan was to make a jazz album. Nothing new there; you could apply the jazz tag to most of what Alice Coltrane's nephew has produced through the years, and many of the opening tracks here are jazz to the core. But You're Dead goes wider and deeper to take a magical run around the musical houses. The wallop of sounds and styles is colossal, be it Kendrick Lamar's rhymes on the already frantic Never Catch Me, or the beautifully framed soft-shuffle drama of Coronus, The Terminator, or how Dirty Projectors' Angel Deradoorian turns Siren Song into a graceful wig-out. Ellison soars above the fray, deftly pushing the sounds through an exhilarating series of machinations and manoeuvres. flying-lotus.com
