Chris Singleton and The Distractions

It’s hard to make an original mark on the music biz these days, so when you have an angle like Chris Singleton’s (a condition that causes him to be “allergic” to various sounds), it can only help your cause. But such angles can only be stretched so far when the music isn’t up to scratch. The Dubliner’s second album is a clutch of pedestrian pop-rock songs that amble through the nearest pub door and settle into a cosy corner for a residency.

Kula Shaker and Kasabian are the closest reference points, but it’s nigh on impossible to get a sense of Singleton’s own personality through the haze of imitative ordinariness. It may be prudent to take his foot off the gasoline and spend some time finding his own distinct sound.
