Rosie McGurran makes accessible, characterful, strongly stated figurative paintings. As the title of her Galway Arts Centre show suggests, The Gatheringfeatures a representative selection of her work from the last decade.
Originally from Belfast, where she grew up and went to art college, McGurran has been based in the village of Roundstone in Connemara for some years now. Apart from pursuing her own work there, she curates the annual Inishlacken Project, continuing the historic artistic links of the tiny, now uninhabited island.
Her paintings describe a consistent narrative space, a world that displays recognisable aspects of her immediate, and quite spectacular, surroundings, albeit with a strong magic realist flavour. In many ways what McGurran does recalls such artists as Paula Rego and Ana Maria Pacheco.
The show also includes a recent series of portraits based on old photographs and a new intaglio print, in an edition of just 50, on sale €150 each.
