Self-portraits usually aren’t about vanity, even if they start out that way. For example, Rembrandt’s earliest works in the genre convey the swagger and confidence of youthful ambition. As time went by, the moderation of that ambition, and the toll of life’s difficulties and reversals, become apparent in his paintings; he records the effects of time and experience with ruthless, riveting honesty.

The University of Limerick houses the National Self-Portrait Collection of Ireland, a valuable, incrementally growing artistic archive, both historical and contemporary. This year sees some 20 additions to the collection by an impressive range of artists in both categories. They include Dieter Blodau, Stephen Brandes, Thomas Brezing, Michael Canning, Oliver Comerford, Simon English, Phil Kelly, Vera Klute, Les Levine, Andrew Manson, Ruth McHugh, Paul Mosse, Caoimhghin Ó Fraithile, Ann Quinn, Paki Smith (above), Hilda Van Stockum, Martyn Turner, Walter Verling, Andrew Vickery and Keith Wilson.
