In the print and online editions of The Irish Times on March 14th, 2019 we published an article entitled “Is Ireland taking its role as Europe’s watchdog seriously?”.
The article stated that Ms Dixon’s appointment as Data Protection Commissioner in 2014 was a closed governmental appointment and lacked transparency. This was incorrect. Ms Dixon was appointed after an open competitive selection process advertised internationally and independently organised and conducted by the Public Appointments Service.
We acknowledge that Ms Dixon has at all times acted independently and properly and is fully committed to firm and robust regulation. We also acknowledge that decisions have been taken in respect of Yahoo!, Nama and Facebook amongst others since her appointment.
We apologise for the error.
