Apple has released a software fix that will restore iPhones and iPads disabled after third-party repairs to the device's fingerprint sensor.

The patched version of iOS 9 is available for those who update their phones and tablets through iTunes, and fixes the error 53 problem that hit some handsets.

The error began showing on iOS devices updated to the latest version of Apple’s software if the phone or tablet had its Touch ID sensor replaced, with reports claiming the problem also affected repairs to the cable too, and some screen repairs causing problems.

Apple said the error was the result of a security feature designed to prevent any interference with the sensor, which stores fingerprint information to unlock the phone and make payments with Apple Pay.

The problem is already the subject of a class action lawsuit in the US.

Apple has updated the support documentation on its site to reflect the fix.
