Two new IDA Ireland-backed projects in Cork will create 265 jobs, bringing to almost 600 the number of new positions created in the county by IDA-backed firms this year.

The latest two projects involve investments totalling €10.42 million.

Marriott Ownership Resorts, the holiday ownership division of US-based Marriott International, will invest $8 million (€8.12 million) in a new European regional headquarters in Cork.

The project will create 250 new jobs over the next five years and will host a significant portion of Marriott's regional activities.

Marriott Ownership Resort president Mr Stephen Weisz said the new regional office would be instrumental in helping his company to continue its growth in Europe.

"The support of IDA Ireland has been tremendous and we look forward to a long and mutually beneficial relationship," he said.

McKesson Corporation, a US distributor of medical supplies and healthcare information technology products and services, will invest €2.3 million to establish a second Irish facility in Cork.

The investment will create 15 jobs. Recruitment will begin this month and the business will be fully operational by the end of November.

The new McKesson facility will also provide production, finishing and distribution for McKesson Health Solutions medical manuals.

The Tánaiste and Minister for Trade, Enterprise and Employment, Ms Harney, said the two investments continued the city's development as a key centre for quality international services industries, providing a balance between manufacturing and services employment.

"This is great for the mix of skills and employment in the city and a good balance between factory and office employment," she said.

She added Cork city was experiencing great success as a location for quality names in quality international services. So far, in 2002 the IDA has secured seven new investments in Cork involving almost 600 new jobs.
