Coin commemorating Sir Charles Algernon Parsons launched

A €15 coin to commemorate the life and work of Sir Charles Algernon Parsons has been launched by the Central Bank.

The coin commemorating the inventor of the steam turbine is silver proof and features a portrait of the engineer with an early model of his steam turbine engine.

Designed by Antonella Napolione and struck in 0.925 sterling silver by BH Mayer Mint, the coin is available to purchase for €60.

Some 6,000 coins will be minted to commemorate Mr Parsons, who grew up in Birr Castle, Co Offaly. His father built the great telescope while his mother was a famous photographer.
