Sport and social media

Sir, – Johnny Watterson suggests in his piece "Connacht's cutting of Sevu Reece shows social media sets the agenda" (Sports Opinion, October 5th) that "Young lads who made mistakes no longer cuts it in a world where social media sets agendas and judges people".

Allow me to suggest that a young man who leaves his partner with bruising on her body was never acceptable, and that this has nothing to do with social media. That bodies such as the IRFU are taking a zero-tolerance approach to domestic abuse is something that should be applauded.

It is beyond time that men learned that their actions have consequences, and that sports bodies will not protect men who abuse women. – Yours, etc,

JOHN CLARKIN,
