Sir, – Emma Keane (March 6th) is intrigued that Emma Stone “slayed in Givenchy”. However, the concept of tabloid newspapers trying to find new words to add hyperbole to their descriptions of female beauty is not new and they have succeeded in changing our usage of language.
For example, the word “stunning” is now used more frequently as a description of beauty than as a rendering of unconsciousness.
The description used by the tabloids that intrigues me most is how they refer to celebrities like Emma Stone or her colleagues as “sizzling in a little black number”.
When I read this all I can think of is a lump of pork cooking in a frying pan.
