Changing the rules on blood donation and gay men

A chara, – Brian McMahon raises an interesting point (Letters, July 2nd) and the difference in donor requirements between England and Ireland. He could also have mentioned Creutzfeldt-Jakob (mad cow disease) and that anyone having lived in England in the 1990s is disqualified from donating both in Ireland, and indeed here in France.

The letter writer only looks at the criteria for donors, and that from an ideological point of view, he does not consider those receiving the donation, their health and their right to blood transfusions as risk-free as possible.
