Gardaí are working with Interpol to confirm the identity of a man who died after he was hit by a motorbike in Co Galway at the weekend.

The man, who is believed to be Romanian, died in the incident which happened just before 10pm on Friday when he was walking on the Pier Road at Rossaveal.

A local man in his late 20s, who was driving the motorbike, has since been released from University Hospital Galway after treatment for minor injuries, while his female pillion passenger remains in hospital with non-life threatening injuries.

A Garda spokesman in Salthill appealed for any witnesses to come forward or to get in contact with Salthill Garda station at 091-514720.

The Romanian man, who was in his 30s, is understood to have been a fisherman on a boat docked at the nearby Rossaveal harbour and was walking back to the boat after spending some time in the locality.

Gardaí in Cavan are investigating a fatal road traffic collision on the R154 at Cavancoulter at about 11.15am yesterday.

A man in his 30s was killed when his motorcycle collided with a tractor. He was pronounced dead at the scene and taken to Cavan General Hospital. The driver of the tractor was airlifted to Tallaght Hospital with injuries described as not life threatening.
