Gardaí in Co Wicklow have named the young man killed in a car crash in Dunlavin on Saturday night

Gardaí in Co Wicklow have named the young man killed in a car crash in Dunlavin on Saturday night. He was James O'Brien (21), Kiltegan, who died when the car he was driving collided with a tree on Saturday.

A passenger in the car was taken to Naas General Hospital where he was treated for minor injuries.

Meanwhile, gardaí have also named the woman who was fatally injured in a crash which occurred on Thursday last at 5pm at Raheenaskeagh Upper, Oulart, Wexford. She was Patricia Hughes (44), Willow Park, Gorey, Wexford.

Some 75 people lost their lives on the Republic's roads from the start of the year up to Saturday night according to provisional figures from the gardaí. While the number killed in January, at 41 was eight ahead of the similar period in 2005, figures for road deaths in February reduced in comparison to 2005. In February 2005 some 37 people were killed while in February of this year 31 people lost their lives.

Of those killed up to Saturday evening this year 39 were drivers; 17 were passengers; 17 were pedestrians; there was one pedal cyclist and one motorcyclist.
