Rock the Vote this morning kick-started its campaign to encourage young people to vote in the referendum on the Lisbon treaty.

Rock the Vote is a non-partisan campaign for young people that was founded last year in the run-up to the general election.

Gearoid O’Rourke, director of Rock the Vote Ireland, said it was seeking to clear up confusion about the referendum.

“We hear from so many sources that young people are apathetic about this referendum - they are not. The real problem is that young people are tired of partisan rhetoric, and so far we just aren’t being given the information we need to make an informed decision.”

On its website, rockthevote.ie, the organisation is providing a guide to the Lisbon Treaty but asks people to make up their own minds on whether proposed changes are positive or negative. It is also providing a guide for those who want to register to vote before this Saturday’s deadline.

The launch this morning in Grand Canal Square featured performances from Sophie Merry, an Irish animator who is heading up French jeans label Etam’s newest ad campaign, and The Flaws, a four-piece band from Co Monaghan, Ireland, who recently released their first album.

The Union of Students in Ireland supported the event.
