Latifat Abisola had to figure out what to do next. As she approached the end of a bachelor in business studies in entrepreneurship at Maynooth University, Abisola felt the time was right to pursue the career she really wanted: law.
“I could have gone straight from college to sit the solicitors exams, but I felt that as a business undergraduate I wanted to learn more about law in a teaching environment,” says Abisola.
“I decided to go for a taught masters in legal science (MLS) because research wouldn’t have been the right fit for me. I know my own strengths and weaknesses and I like the environment of lectures and tutorials.”
Postgraduate study can be costly, but Abisola feels there will be payback in the medium to long-term. “It is difficult financially, but I was lucky enough to get a grant from SUSI and a scholarship to help with tuition fees.”
On her MLS course, Abisola has learnt about legal systems, contract law, criminal law, tort, and more. She is interested in writing a thesis on Irish abortion law.
As well as preparing her for a legal career, the course is providing her with broad skills to develop her graduate career. “I’m talking to people, I’m researching, I’m writing, I’m communicating. Right now I don’t know exactly what area of law I will work in, or whether I’ll eventually pursue a PhD – but I know that what I’m learning will stand to me in my future career.”
