Cigarettes worth more than €600,000, disguised as railway sleepers, have been seized at Dublin Port.

Branded Marvel, the illegal haul comprised 864,000 cigarettes with a tax value of €483,000 to the State.

Officers at the port said they made the discovery on Tuesday as a result of routine profiling. They were confiscated from a vessel that had arrived into the Republic from Rotterdam.

The search was carried out with the assistance of Revenue’s mobile X-ray scanner.
