Writer Paul Howard says his dog Humphrey “was my wisecracking sidekick and I was his straight man” – a bold statement from Ireland’s foremost comedy writer, the author of the hilarious Ross O’Carroll-Kelly bestselling books.
He says he soon questioned his decision to become a dog owner when the baleful-looking Bassett Hound arrived into his and wife Mary’s life but soon it became clear that it was Humphrey’s world and they were just living in it. And they loved every minute.
He was the writer’s constant companion for more than 13 years.
His death has hit Howard hard and in the weeks since he has been trying to navigate his grief, exploring just how much Humphrey meant to him.
