This year saw the highest number of Irish people emigrate to Australia in over a decade.
In the year to April nearly 11,000 headed down under. Emigrate is a big word because many will be recent graduates off on a two year adventure before returning home – many others though especially those travelling on skilled worker visas will stay.
As summer begins in Australia and as young Irish adults with good jobs find themselves stuck in their childhood bedroom with no hope of independent living it’s not hard to understand the promise offered by that plane ticket.
