Dream on, Bernie Sanders

Sir, – David McWilliams asks us to consider the possibility that Bernie Sanders might nominate Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez as running mate in his tilt for the US presidency in 2020 ("Can Bernie Sanders fix the broken American Dream? Yes he can", Opinion, February 23rd).

I’m no expert on the US constitution but I understand that a president must be at least 35 years old.

As a role of the vice-president is to assume the office of president in the event of his or her death or incapacity, and as Ms Ocasio-Cortez will not reach that age until 2024, the suggestion is fanciful.

And just in case anyone writes to point out that a successful candidate does not necessarily have to appoint his or her running mate to be vice-president, I suggest that outcome is extremely unlikely. – Yours, etc,
