Sir, – If the wildly variable and uncertain €200-€600 million costing for hosting the America’s Cup were instead reserved to improve the facilities in the many small sailing clubs spread around the country, it is likely to have a far more beneficial effect in terms of payback, both in producing more world-class sailors and in helping more people to discover the great entertainment and fun that can be had from sailing an inexpensive second-hand dinghy and improving health and a sense of wellbeing by experiencing the outdoors up close and personal.
Though any spare Government cash available might be better spent providing housing at this point in time.
– Yours, etc,
DAVID DORAN,
