Be safe, be seen

Sir, – The dark nights are upon us, and pedestrians in dark clothes do not seem to realise how invisible they are on our roads at night. Sometimes all a driver sees are the shining eyes of a dog being walked, a white plastic bag being carried, or fluorescent strips on running shoes. I appeal to all pedestrians to wear at least a hi-vis armband or belt. They are light enough but they could be a lifesaver. Otherwise one could wear a hi-vis waistcoat or jacket while out at night.

I feel strongly that we should campaign to have reflective strips included in the manufacture of all school blazers and jackets and everyone’s winter jackets.

When my children were in primary school they were issued with reflective arm bands but this no longer seems to happen. – Yours, etc,

MARGARET MARSHALL,
