Rent control does not work

There must be another way

Letters to the Editor. Illustration: Paul Scott
The Irish Times - Letters to the Editor.

Sir, – The Dutch central bank president Klass Knot has called for a reversal of rent controls in The Netherlands, as he says the data tells him it has failed.

It’s time for the Irish Government to realise that there’s a difference between being seen to do “something” and actually doing something useful.

The only way to reduce rents is to increase supply. Rent controls don’t work, evidently, because they disincentive supply. – Yours, etc,

CHARLES McLAUGHLIN,
