The parents of actor Anton Yelchin, who died after being crushed by his own car in June, are set to file a wrongful death lawsuit against Fiat Chrysler.

Yelchin, known for roles in Star Trek and Green Room, died after his Jeep Grand Cherokee rolled towards him at his home in Los Angeles. The car was under recall for problems with the gear shifter.

According to Variety, there had been over 700 complaints about the issue, including 266 accidents.

As well as suing the car company, Viktor and Irina Yelchin are filing suits against AutoNation and ZF North America, who manufactured the gear shifter. The couple are also filing for control of the late actor's estate as he did not leave a will.

According to People, the 27-year-old was worth over $1.3m (€1.16m). Last month, his parents took out an advert in the Hollywood Reporter to express their gratitude for the support they had received.

“To all of you who have sent flowers and gifts,” it read, “for your condolences and kind words and to all who came to celebrate the life of our dear son, Anton. We are deeply grateful for your unconditional love for our son. He would be surprised by how many hearts and souls he touched.”
