The four-year BSc in optometry at the DIT is the only approved optometry course in the State and it has only 25 places each year. The points therefore are quite high, settling at 505 in the CAO second-round 2001.

After graduating, optometrists must pass the examinations of the Association of Optometrists, Ireland. If elected, they may be awarded the Fellowship of the Association of Optometrists, Ireland (FAOI). Candidates can be registered with the Opticians Board.

The Science Faculty of the University of Ulster in Coleraine also offers a BSc in optometry.

Optometrists can earn upwards of €25,000 to €35,000.
