Gardaí believe they know who stole thousands of euro from a Dublin Garda station after the money was confiscated from criminals, including a major organised crime gang.

About €12,000 went missing last year from a secure lock-up section at Kevin Street, one of the busiest Garda stations in the country. Some of the money stolen was being stored there having been confiscated from the Kinahan gang.

A chief suspect has been identified after an internal inquiry.

The 41-year-old man was arrested and questioned at Crumlin Garda station under section 4 of the Theft and Fraud Offences Act. He was released on Monday without charge.

However, the investigation is continuing and the replies the suspect gave while under arrest have now been added to the case file. It is now being finalised and will be sent to the Director of Public Prosecutions for a decision on criminal charges.

The Irish Times understands the Garda will be recommending that the man, who is not a Garda be charged. The man is not a Garda member but his presence at the station would not have aroused suspicion.

The money is believed to have been taken by the man in smaller amounts over an unspecified period. While it was not clear how many thefts had taken place, the total sum stolen is believed to be about €12,000.
