If there was ever an argument whether or not to use an architect and designer on a renovation project, 15 Russell Avenue in Drumcondra would win hands down.
Without succumbing to too many superlatives, the transformation from a shabby dark box to a bright free-flowing space is simply stunning.
The motto “a place for everything and everything in its place” really holds true here, as the space is small but excellent design means every household necessity has a home.

Designer Niamh McNeela and architect Daria Lisowska of Seek Design were the pair behind the transformation of this small cottage, which was purchased in 2013 for €127,000.
"It was in terrible condition. It was basically two dark rooms and an awful extension at the rear," says McNeela. In conjunction with builder Niall Hehir of Building Matters, the house was transformed over a period of six months.
The challenges were to add more light, increase the floor space by converting the attic and restructure the ground floor, as well as all the work to bring the property up to date.
While the renovation and the new build were being done, the team discovered the old brick walls behind the plaster were in excellent condition. Exposed and cleaned, they are now an integral part of the design, providing a striking contrast to the Scandinavian-style interior.
There are two bedrooms, while the attic, which adds a further 19sq m to the 65sq m house, is currently used as a third bedroom. It would, however, also make a great living space.
The addition of three floor-length windows casts an abundance of light into the living area downstairs.
Number 8 would make a super alternative to an apartment and its design perfectly combines simplicity and style with functionality. It is for sale through Sherry FitzGerald for €315,000.
