Edwardian house a TV noir setting

Glengarrif, 34 Alma Road, Monkstown, Co. Dublin

This detached Edwardian property in Monkstown has played a supporting role in a new noir television series starring Gabriel Byrne.

Glengarriff, a four-bedroom mock-Tudor property, at 34 Alma Road in Monkstown, is the setting for some of the scenes in Quirke , a new TV series bringing to life the namesake consultant pathologist, a hard-boiled man described as being "more at ease among the cold silent slabs" than in the company of his colleagues.

The series is set in Dublin and is based on the Benjamin Black books Christine Falls , The Silver Swan and Elegy for April . Black is a pen name of novelist John Banville.

The property, which features in the Silver Swan episode, will be auctioned through agents Lisney with an AMV of €800,000 on April 17th.

The interior is character laden – a mash-up of the 1950s and 1960s with some original features from its build year, 1928, most notably the fine statement staircase in the hall.

The 145sq m (1560sq ft) house opens into a sizeable hall with a study to the right. This room is small with a bijou mahogany fireplace.

Across the hall, the smoke- tinged walls of the sittingroom are perfect for the single- source lighting used by the noir genre. The dual-aspect room has a fine mahogany mantelpiece. Adjacent to it is the diningroom, a square space with a rug covering its original bare boards.

The floral wallpaper in the breakfast room is a 1950s throwback. This is one of the rooms used by the production designer Susie Cullen whose other TV credits include Vera and Raw .

The blancmange pink built-in kitchen is a relic from the 1960s. From here there are peek-a-boo views of the sea.

Upstairs, four bedrooms are laid-out around a C-shaped landing.

The master bedroom is to the front and has a dormer window and tiled fireplace. Next door is another dormer-windowed double bedroom with dual-aspect windows and a deep window seat. There are two more large single or queen-size bedrooms as well as the family bathroom and separate wc.

Outside, there is a sizeable lawned front garden. The back garden is east-facing and measures 10.3m long by 15.5m wide. A hedge as tall as the house screens Scoil Lorcáin, situated to the rear of the property, from view. There is a free-standing garage and off- street parking for several cars.
