57 South Hill in Dartry is home to psychotherapist Mary Logue and solicitor Helen Kilroy. Logue, a former international hockey player, has a distinguished 153 senior caps for Ireland. Having hung up the hockey stick in 2001, Logue took to golfing and within a couple of years was playing off an enviable handicap of nine.
The couple bought the property in 2001 and undertook extensive refurbishment in 2002. “We used an architect and engineer for structural work but really the credit goes to interior designer Clodagh Barry,” says Logue.
Barry, with whom the couple worked on previous projects, changed a dark two-room space at the rear of the property into a bright open plan living/dining/kitchen area and gave the rest of the property a swish overhaul.

A pitched roof with Velux windows was installed in the new living area, giving an airy feel, and a rather large Poinsettia that has been blooming since Christmas gives an indication of the light and passive heat flooding the room.
In the kitchen, hidden storage units sit around solid oak presses.
A glass block splashback is lit from behind, creating unusual lustres at night. An oak and granite island in the centre of the kitchen is used for informal dining and has integrated appliances underneath.
The formal dining space off the kitchen has access to the garden, and features a white limestone open fire as does the formal livingroom, which is interconnected via sliding doors.
Warm atmosphere
The property has solid oak flooring throughout; this coupled with cream panelling in the hallway creates a warm atmosphere that some 1950s houses can lack. Upstairs are three bedrooms, the master of which has a wall of handmade wardrobes.
A fourth box bedroom was replaced with an en suite for the guest room and a stairs to the attic, which now functions as Logue’s home office. The panelled theme is continued here with lots of storage in the eaves behind a mixture of oak and cream units.
The garden features a deck, a vegetable plot and external sound system.
Number 57, standing at 152sq m (1,640sq ft) is in excellent condition and for sale through Sherry FitzGerald with an asking price of €935,000.
