Albariño 2016, Rías Baixas, Beira Rula feiticeira

Albariño, the favourite grape of Rías Baixas in north-eastern Spain, is becoming deservedly popular. The best wines combine succulent plump pears and peaches with a bracing citrus acidity. Some even have a saline whiff to them. The cheapest versions can taste a little confected, more fruit-drops than fruit, and the really good, expensive ones, are, well, expensive. So I was delighted to come across this very sophisticated perfectly balanced wine in Whelehan’s in Loughlinstown for €14.95. It is delicious and great value for money. Gèrard Bertrand H de l’Hospitalet Malbec 2015

O’Briens are in the midst of their annual wine sale, the biggest of the year, with more than 100 wines on offer. I have featured the Bertrand Malbec before but the current version is the best so far, and, I think, cheaper than last year. It is a light easy supple wine with dark cherries, a hint of spice and a nice twist of liquorice. A good all-rounder with or without food. Great value for €8.95 from O’Briens.
